DECLARATION OF SUPPORT

I hereby pledge my full-hearted support for the residents of the Garvaghy Road and other besieged nationalist
residents in their desire to live free from sectarian harassment and intimidation.

The right to "freedom from sectarian harassment" is specifically guaranteed under the terms of the Good Friday
Agreement and yet this right is still being denied as a result of attempts by the loyal orders - the Orange Order,
Apprentice Boys and Black Preceptory - to stage sectarian marches through nationalist and Catholic
communities in the North of Ireland.

The loyal orders are sectarian organisations and their parades have been a source of conflict, abuse and
violence for very many years. A number of their current leaders have publicly declared their intention to use
the marching issue to destroy the Good Friday Agreement. 

The campaign by the Orange Order to force its parade down the Garvaghy Road has been particularly vicious
and has been accompanied by widespread violence and intimidation. People have been murdered as a direct
result of this campaign and many others have been injured and had their homes and businesses destroyed.

The ongoing siege of the Garvaghy Road has had a seriously detrimental effect on the physical, psychological
and social well-being of the local residents. Other communities have suffered similar problems as a result of
parades by the loyal orders.

I call upon the Irish and British Governments, the Churches, all political parties and all those with influence to
act in defence of the basic human rights of the besieged residents in the North of Ireland.

I also call upon them to ensure the protection of all people whose lives and well-being are under threat as a
result of campaigns to force sectarian marches upon nationalist communities.

I call upon them to uphold the right of the residents of the Garvaghy Road to live free from sectarian
harassment and to stand by the human rights provisions of the Good Friday Agreement, the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention of Human Rights.
