At 3:55 am, Sunday morning, security forces moved into the Lower Ormeau Road, sealing it off completely. No one can go in or out unless they are on the electoral register. The siege began a full 28 hours before the scheduled Orange Order feeder march on Monday the 13th. The residents of the Lower Ormeau are now cut off and isolated for more than a day in preparation for Orange feet to parade down their street. The Lower Ormeau Road has seen some of the worst displays of triumphalism in the last few years during the annual march there, and the people of that area do not deserve to be imprisoned to allow the same actions to take place again.
The Residents of the Garvaghy Road send their full support and solidarity to those on the Lower Ormeau. The Garvaghy Road community, better than most this last week, knows the hardship and pain of being put under siege for the sake of a bigoted, sectarian display. May all the communities that are imprisoned this week, Garvaghy Road, Lower Ormeau, Dunloy and others, see a peaceful conclusion to the situation and justice and equality for the Nationalist people of Ireland.
